Children's literature
In the beginning
When we first arrived in Mozambique we were very impressed with the large numbers of children in the churches. We were likewise amazed by the way they would sing in church with such gusto an d enthusiasm in their hearts!
However, we soon became aware that there were very few resources available to enable children and young people to hear and learn God’s Word at their level.
So Cámica, who had been involved in children’s work in Portugal, set about preparing material (known as activity books) for the churches to use in their Sunday schools. Please note – we say Sunday schools but often they meet the previous day when they practice their songs for church – so it’s no problem!

The fruit
Over the years this work has grown significantly and has been very fruitful. Church pastors have told us that children who used to do the lessons have since grown up and are now church leaders; some are now even teachers in Sunday schools.
In other encouraging feedback we have heard of children attending Sunday school while their parents stayed at home. But then, when the parents notice the change of behaviour in their children they too get drawn to church and then come to faith in Christ Jesus – such is the power of God’s Word!
We have likewise been told that the activity books have significantly helped children to improve on their reading and writing skills. That’s a very significant investment in young lives – Chris once heard a secondary school teacher say that a country’s biggest investment is its youth!

State schools
In 2002 we introduced some of our material into the state schools to teach Christian morals.
This was at the request of one of the religious affairs directors after seeing some of our material. So, for some years we were preparing material for schools as well as for Sunday schools.

Significant growth
For a number of years a member of our team, Domingos, used to take activity books to rural churches and spend time training the teachers in the use of the material.
He did a grand job before his untimely death in 2012, but we still can see the fruit of his labours in the areas where he worked in the centre of the country.

Activity books increasing in size
For many years the activity books would provide lessons for 12 to 16 weeks. Now we have increased the lessons in the books so that there are enough to keep a Sunday school running for six to twelve months.
This is especially helpful for churches that are located in isolated areas, while the time and expense we save on travel means that we can look forward to reaching a greater number of churches which therefore benefits many more children.

We are aware that there are others from missions and organizations who are also doing fantastic work in this same area in Mozambique.
If you are one of those, then please feel free to contact Cámica. Maybe we can share ideas and avoid unnecessary duplication in churches which already receive material.
Similarly, please feel free to contact us if you would like to be involved in this work there is plenty to do.
In 2020 it was calculated that 52% of the population was under 18 years of age, with 23% of the overall population being adolescents (age 10-19). And that’s just in Mozambique!
